‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Director Reveals Studio’s Only Request for Film (Exclusive Interview)

I’m so glad you brought up Proximus because he’s this character that I don’t think we see enough of anymore, who is a ruler who has righteous anger and is right. But of course, it might not be the most polite way of doing things.

That’s right. Maybe he’s doing it wrong. And that’s a question about that – Noa has multiple father figures in his life in this film, and they all end. And it will be interesting to see how these different ideas, these little angels on his shoulder whispering to him, how he will decide where he wants to go in the future. I think it’ll be really fun to explore that if we’re lucky enough to move forward with the films. About how a character’s innocent, blank slate ends up being changed forever by the things he’s learned. You know what I mean? It’s kind of cool.

Because ultimately, in coming-of-age stories, growing up doesn’t just mean growing up. There also comes a moment when you realize that the adults in your life are fallible and not perfect.

For me, this is a big moment as I grow up and realize that the elders in my life are wrong and fallible. This is a big idea that Noa has to come to: to question the people who came before without losing respect and honor for it. So that’s the trick. That was a cool idea, I thought, that we at least touched on.

I definitely think the teens and early 20s are some of my favorite characters because that’s when they are at their most passionate and have their greatest desire for justice –

And everything is collapsing around them.

They all think they are invincible and then they realize things fall apart. Things are hard. They don’t have as much power as they once thought.

Yes absolutely.

Watching a character explore that while also being in the world of Planet of the Apes I thought was a wonderful choice.

That’s good. That’s cool.
