Verdugo was told by her doctor that she was allergic to chemicals called cobalt and chromate. NJ Advance MediaThose chemicals are in Verdugo’s tattoos as well as his batting gloves. Cobalt, which is found in most color dyes, is in Verdugo’s tattoos, while chromate, which is used to cure leather, is found in his personalized batting gloves.
This combination has caused problems for Verdugo’s hands since 2021.
“My hands hurt,” Verdugo told NJ Advance Media. “They get blisters. Then they open up and start to scab over. It’s like very dry skin. I’ve been dealing with this since they started barking in 2021.”
The situation recently led the Yankees to send the struggling outfielder to an allergist to figure out the problem. The doctor told Verdugo he had an allergy to his glove. The lefty was reportedly “shocked” to hear the news.
Verdugo’s gloves are made by sports equipment retailer Franklin Sports. John Ballas, Franklin’s senior director of baseball operations, said his company would fix the problem.

“This is something that has never come up before, but I hope we’ll have an answer soon,” Ballas said. “It’s good that Alex finally knows what he’s allergic to, because this has been going on for a while. The next step is that I’ll have my people look into what’s in the leather. Once we make a final decision, I’ll figure out how we can make something for Alex that won’t cause him allergies.”
Verdugo is also considering getting Dupixent injections.
“I’ve had it for three years. That’s a long time,” he said.
