According to police, Pearsall was walking alone just after 3:30 p.m. local time on Saturday when the suspect attempted to rob him at gunpoint on the corner of Geary and Grant streets. The San Francisco Fire Department said the 911 call came in at 3:38 a.m. PT, with police and emergency personnel arriving shortly after.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said the suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting. Scott said the initial investigation showed he was acting alone, “as far as we know,” adding that police would continue to examine numerous surveillance cameras in the area as they investigate.

Scott said there was no indication the suspect targeted Piersall because he is a professional football player. He said a gun was used and multiple shots were fired.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said a decision on whether to charge the suspect, who is a juvenile, will be made Tuesday or Wednesday.

The 49ers selected Piersall with the No. 31 pick in April’s NFL draft. He was slowed in training camp by shoulder and hamstring issues, but he returned to practice last week wearing a blue “no contact” jersey.
