let’s take a look:
Gregg Berhalter (2018–24)
It’s not often that coaches are fired, rehired and then fired again by the same team – but that’s what happened in the case of Gregg Berhalter and the national team. Although he finished his managerial career with a 68.2% win rate (44-17-13, WLD) – the highest of any manager (minimum 20 games coached) in team history – Berhalter failed to lead the US to the knockout stages of the last Copa America, and his team was eliminated. NetherlandsIn the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, France were defeated 3–1.
The first case was particularly scandalous, as the US became the first host nation not to advance to the knockout stage of the Copa America since the group stage was introduced in 1975. Prior to entering that tournament, the US had not advanced out of the group stage in 19 previous continental and global tournaments. At home. Berhalter was also just 2-6-7 (WLD) against Top 25 teams when excluded Mexicoand 0-5-5 (W-L-D) against top 15 teams excluding continental rivals.
At the club level, Berhalter coached Columbus Crew and Hammarby, a Swedish club. In 239 matches between the two teams, they have only won 92.
Bruce Arena(1998–2006, 2016–17)
No manager in team history has coached more games than Bruce Arena, who has a record of 81-32-35 (W-L-D). His 66.6% win rate is the second-highest after Berhalter (coaching at least 20 games), and he led the team to its best ever World Cup finish – reaching the quarterfinals in 2002 before losing GermanyAlthough these accomplishments make him the most successful coach in American history, he has never coached outside of MLS.DC United, New York Red Bulls, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution) and also led the team to a last-place finish in their group in the 2006 World Cup.
Jurgen Klinsmann (2011–16)
Klinsmann was an exciting appointment, having enjoyed incredible success as both a player and a manager before taking the USMNT job in 2011. He played for powerhouse clubs such as inter MilanTottenham, and Bayern Munich before becoming manager of the German national team from 2004 to 2006. At the 2006 World Cup, he led his country to the semi-finals as the host nation. After Germany declined to renew his contract, Klinsmann joined Bayern Munich, but was fired with five matches remaining in the season. For perspective, Munich won the league the season before he arrived and the season after he left.
He led the USMNT to a 55-27-16 (W-L-D) record, including a loss in the Round of 16 Belgium in the 2014 World Cup. In 2015, he led them to a fourth-place finish in the Gold Cup, which included a defeat Jamaica And PanamaAt the 2016 Copa America, the US would lose 4–0 Argentina The biggest disappointment came just a few months later, when the team lost to Mexico 2-1 at home and then 4-0 in the semi-finals. costa rica The US performed poorly in World Cup qualification – which led to his firing in November of that year. Following this performance, the US failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Klinsmann’s following stays included: Hertha BSCwhere he was fired after just 10 weeks, and South Korean National Teamwho sacked him after 18 matches. The president of the Korean Football Association said, “Coach Klinsmann failed to demonstrate the leadership we expected from a national team coach, including game management, player management and a work attitude that enhances the national team’s competitiveness.”
Bob Bradley (2007–11)
Bradley is the third and last coach to have a winning percentage above 60% (43-25-12, WLD) for the USMNT (coaching a minimum of 20 games), joining Berhalter and Klinsmann. The biggest accomplishment of his tenure is a Round of 16 appearance (losing) in the 2010 World Cup Ghana), but finishing last at the 2007 Copa America and losing to Mexico in the 2009 Gold Cup final also hurt his performance. He also coached the 2011 Gold Cup final, where the United States blew a 2–0 lead against Mexico into a 4–2 defeat.
His stops at club level include Chicago FireMetroStars, Chivas USA, Los Angeles FCAnd Toronto FCHe has been a three-time MLS Coach of the Year, but has been praised for his European jobs (Stabaek, Le Havre, Swansea City) Bradley also coached the team. Egypt National TeamWhere he was relieved of his duties after 36 matches.
Steve Sampson (1995–98)
Steve Sampson compiled a record of 26-22-14 (W-L-D) as the USMNT head coach, the highlight of which was reaching the semifinals at the 1995 Copa America. However, at the 1998 World Cup, the team finished last in their group under his guidance. That same year, the US lost to Mexico in the Gold Cup final. Sampson went on to coach the Costa Rican national team and the Los Angeles Galaxy, and each stop was a short stint.
mauricio pochettino
And now, the Pochettino era will begin. There is a huge difference between his resume and the other players on this list. As a player at Paris Saint-Germain and Espanyol, he later took on the head coach job at both of these places. At Espanyol, which was his first managerial position, he struggled – finishing 53-70-38 (WLD) in La Liga. However, in January 2013, he joined Southampton midway through the season and led the team to major victories liverpoolChelsea, and Manchester City – The champion of that time.

Shortly after his success at Southampton (23-19-19, finishing in WLD), Pochettino joined Tottenham, where he compiled an impressive 159-72-62 record in five seasons.
His time with Spurs was highlighted by a Champions League runner-up finish in the 2018–19 season, and he won the London Football Awards Manager of the Year that same year. Tottenham never finished lower than fifth in the EPL during his five full seasons, including three top-three finishes.
Pochettino’s next stop will be at French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain, where he had the most success. Pochettino led PSG to a 55-14-15 (WLD) record and won three trophies – the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions. In 2023, he moved to Chelsea, taking the club to sixth in the table after finishing 12th the previous season.
