NEW YORK — Two days ago, Frances Tiafoe was going into his third-round match against Ben Shelton at 50-50 odds, knowing that even if he won, he would still be a big underdog in his next match. Defending champion Novak Djokovic was waiting for him.
On Sunday night, Tiafoe hit a forehand along the sideline to reach the US Open quarterfinals, with an open draw in front of him and 24,000 people surrounding him under the lights.
In less than 48 hours, they went from a weak team to last in the standings.
On another thrilling night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Tiafoe defeated Djokovic’s conqueror Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 in just over three hours. He will face Grigor Dimitrov in the last eight, with the wind in his favour and confidence high.
