The Philadelphia Union announced Monday that it has sent midfielder Jose Martinez to top-tier Brazilian club Corinthians Sao Paulo in a transfer deal.

“Jose has played a vital role in the club’s success in his five seasons with Union,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement. “He has continued to develop during his time with Union, becoming incredibly influential in midfield and a key asset in the milestones the team has achieved. We appreciate his dedication and passion for the team and the city both on and off the field and wish him all the best in this next chapter.”

Union is 6-10-9 (27 points) this season and is 10th in the Eastern Conference. Corinthians are in the middle of their Serie A season.
