The Washington Commanders will play at ‘Northwest Stadium’ even though it’s neither in the north nor the west
In one of the more hilarious examples of stadium rights, the Washington Commanders are set to begin the 2024 season at “Northwest Stadium.”

Northwest Federal Credit Union was actually founded locally, in Herndon, Virginia. Why did they decide to call a business in Virginia “Northwest”? It’s unclear, since Herndon isn’t even located in northwest Virginia, as it is east of Dulles International Airport and is located in Fairfax County, while there are 55 other counties located to the west in Virginia.
Best guess is that the pub where he dreamed up this bank was located in northwest Washington, DC – but that gives him an excuse he doesn’t deserve.
If you need to know how Northwest Stadium relates to the rest of the United States: If you’re in the white area on the map below, you’re north or west of Northwest Stadium. If you live in the red area, it’s northwest of you.
Still, with Cal, Stanford, and SMU joining the Atlantic Coast Conference we have become desensitized to the geographic ridiculousness in sports.
