The absence of Anthony Richardson down the stretch in Sunday’s game against the Jaguars opened the door for veteran Joe Flacco to shine.

The 39-year-old backup nearly orchestrated a comeback in the fourth quarter, completing an impressive 75% of his passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite Flacco’s heroics, Colts head coach Shane Steichen made it clear that Richardson’s starting position is not in jeopardy.

NFL insider Ari Mirov reported that Steichen told reporters on Monday, “He’s our starting quarterback,” confirming his role after Richardson recovered from an oblique injury.

Well, Flacco’s performance, which earned him a 121.3 rating, was the most yardage seen by a Colts quarterback since Matt Ryan’s 389-yard game against Jacksonville in 2022.

Whereas, it has been a rocky road for the young quarterback. Richardson’s rookie year was cut short after just four games due to shoulder surgery, and his 2024 season was off to a good start.

The 22-year-old has completed just 50.6% of his passes while accumulating 654 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions. He also showed off his mobility, rushing for 141 yards and a score.

However, Steichen isn’t buying into the notion that starting Richardson means sacrificing wins for development.

He believes the team can compete now while also nurturing its future franchise quarterback.

Richardson returned to practice in a limited capacity last week, but his availability for Sunday’s game against the Titans remains uncertain.

The Colts are undoubtedly looking forward to his return, but only time will tell if he’ll be ready to take the field.
