The Wallaroos have ended a three-match losing streak and delivered their best performance so far under Joe Yapp – getting revenge on Wales in their opener of the WXV 2 competition in Cape Town.
After a close first half, Eva Carpani scored a try to give the Australians a 10–5 lead at the break, in the second half the Wallaroos broke the Welsh and the floodgates opened – emerging 37–5 winners.
Layne Morgan got the Wallaroos on the board early thanks to a brilliant break from Maya Stewart – before Wales counter-attacked through their reliable rolling maul with a try to Carys Phillips.
Fatala Moleka – who was a late inclusion after Arabella McKenzie was ruled out through injury – produced a player of the match performance and produced her best performance to date in the gold medal, forming a brilliant partnership with Morgan and adding to her efforts. Tried for.
Maya Stewart scored two tries in the second half, confirming her status as the Wallaroos’ main attacking weapon – a contender for try of the year with her long-range effort.
Tries from Desire Miller and Lori Cramer capped an impressive display in scrum time, which saw Welsh struggle against a well-drilled Walrus scrum that had caused them many problems in their match at Newport last week .
The result sends a strong message to the rest of the competition, with South Africa also off to a winning start against Japan.
The Wallaroos will face the hosts on 6 October, before concluding their season and campaign against Scotland.
