Indian para-athletes created history in Paris by surpassing their highest haul of 19 medals won at the Tokyo Paralympic Games three years ago.

The Indian contingent has added 20 medals to its ever-growing tally and will now have an opportunity to further add to its record tally of medals in a single edition of the Paralympics.

Earlier on Monday and Tuesday, the Indian contingent won 13 medals for the country, taking the medal tally to a record 20 including three gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals. At the Tokyo edition (August 24 – September 5, 2021), India recorded their best ever performance with 19 medals including five gold, eight silver and six bronze.

It rained double podium finishes for India in athletics after Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar won silver and bronze respectively in the men’s javelin throw F46 event at the Stade de France in the Paris Paralympics.

This year India has sent its largest ever Paralympic contingent, comprising 84 athletes across 12 sports, a testament to the country’s growing para-sports ecosystem. India’s participation at the Paris 2024 Paralympics not only represents a significant increase in numbers, but also an increase in medal expectations.
