Peppa performed brilliantly for Kerala Blasters, former coach’s words proved prophetic

KOCHI: “Believe me; he is young, strong and talented. He will do well.” These were the words of former Kerala Blasters head coach Ivan Vukomanovic about Kwame Peprah when he joined the team at the start of the 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) season. Ivan was responding to criticism over the Ghanaian striker’s inclusion in the playing XI despite his repeated failures and inefficiency in front of goal.

And Peprah has not disappointed Ivan. Although Mikael Stahre took over the reins of Kerala Blasters after Peprah returned to the team after a long injury lay-off, Ivan was replaced by Mikael Stahre, but he got an early chance to impress the new coach. He has scored four goals in Kerala Blasters’ first three matches in the ongoing Durand Cup. The Blasters have entered the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament by scoring 16 goals over their opponents in three group-stage matches. The 23-year-old Peprah, who was at the forefront of this spectacular goal-fest, talks about the new coach and his expectations for the upcoming season in a conversation with Malayala Manorama.

Part:
How do you feel as Kerala Blasters gear up for the new ISL season under Swedish manager Mikael Stahre?
As a professional team, it is important to stick to the coach’s strategy to be successful. The new coach has prepared a game plan. The players need to adjust and adapt according to his vision and strategy.

Are you excited to have a new offensive partner in Noha Sadaoui for the new season?
Of course. Dimi (Dimitrios Diamantakos) was my attacking partner last year and I believe we did a great job. I couldn’t play the whole season with him because of a back injury. When I came back to the team he was gone. These things are part and parcel of professional football. So far so good! My focus is on blending in with the new players, including Noah, and building successful partnerships.

How difficult was it to deal with the injury and get back on the field?
It was not an easy journey. It was the toughest phase of my life. The franchise management, teammates and medical staff supported me and helped me get back on the field. It was because of them that I was able to recover quickly and start playing again.

What are your expectations from the new session?
A professional footballer is like a soldier. He must always be ready for war. My fight is to maintain the pride of my club.

You are about to complete two years in Kerala. How are you feeling?
Kerala is a beautiful place that has always piqued my interest. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. I have never felt like an outsider here. Kerala is my second home, a home away from home.
