NorthEast United 5 – 0 Jamshedpur FC

(Azarai 5′,90′, Gogoi 44′, 55′, Nickson 82′)

NorthEast United produced a display of attacking brilliance to stop high-flying Jamshedpur in their tracks as they won 5-0 at home and moved up to fifth. Aledin Azarai opened the scoring with a superb goal before turning to Parthib Gogoi. The young Indian, playing centre-forward for the second consecutive game, made it a brace after tucking in a MS Jithin set-up move. Young midfielder McCartan Nickson then scored a superb goal from outside the box to make it four, before Azrai made it five after being sent one-on-one on a sharp counter.

However, with half an hour left between the first and second goals, Jamshedpur’s Stephen Eze was sent off for a second yellow. Khalid Jamil’s team – already arguably the second best by that time – never found a way back into the game. If the score didn’t emphasize NEUFC’s dominance, how about this for the statistics – shots on goal, NEUFC 24, JFC 7.

Kerala Blasters 1-3 Bengaluru FC

Bengaluru FC won their first ISL away match in 598 days as they beat Kerala Blasters 3-1 in Kochi to move four points clear at the top of the table. Gerard Zaragoza’s side now have 16 points from their opening six games – the same as they had in 2018-19, when they eventually topped the league stage and lifted the ISL trophy.

After a poor performance by Pritam Kotal, Jorge Pereira Diaz gave Bengaluru the lead with a brilliant shot over goalkeeper Som Kumar. However, the Blasters went into half time with an equalizing goal when Jesus Jimenez converted a penalty which was awarded for Rahul Bheke’s tackle from behind on Kwame Peprah.

Substitute Mendez brought the game to its peak late in the second half when he was first to attack Som Kumar and head Alberto Noguera’s cross into the empty net. And then in injury time, with Blasters heading for the equaliser, he found himself with freedom in Blasters’ half of the field to score his third goal of the season.

Chennaiyin FC 2-2 FC Goa

It was an entertaining game in Chennai early on the sixth day of this season’s ISL as Chennaiyin FC scored a late equalizer through Daniel Chima Chukwu to deny Manolo Marquez’s FC Goa full points.

After a good start for Goa, Chennaiyin took the lead as Odei Onindia’s clearance deflected off Wilman Jordan Gill and into the net. Goa fought hard and equalized in first-half stoppage time as Udanta Singh made a good attack from a set-piece and saw the ball curl over his shoulder into the net.

Armando Sadiku then scored his fifth goal of the season, converting a penalty which was won by Dejan Dražić, who drew a foul from Samik Mitra. Ultimately, in controversial circumstances, the equalizing goal came from Chukwu, whose header from a set-piece was hit on the crossbar by Laxmikant Kattimani and then dribbled along the goal-line. The referee awarded a goal, but there was no replay angle showing that the ball had crossed the full line.
