She was part of the agitation by wrestlers, mostly from Haryana, against then Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year over allegations of sexual harassment.
She said, “When I could not play in Paris I felt I was very unlucky, but after returning to India and seeing the love and support I received here I feel I am very lucky.”
Ms Phogat said such moves will also encourage other female sportspersons that their communities are there to support them even in their worst times.
She said, “I will forever be grateful for this honour, which is greater than any medal.”
Ms Phogat, who hails from Balali in Haryana, faced a heartbreaking situation after she was disqualified on the day of the final match of the 50kg category at the Paris Olympics.
