My fight has just begun, says Vinesh Phogat on being honoured with gold medal by Haryana Khap

Phogat said at an event organized in her honor, “My fight is not over yet, rather it has just begun. The fight for the honor of our daughters has just begun. We had said the same thing during our protest.”

She was part of the agitation by wrestlers, mostly from Haryana, against then Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year over allegations of sexual harassment.

She said, “When I could not play in Paris I felt I was very unlucky, but after returning to India and seeing the love and support I received here I feel I am very lucky.”

Ms Phogat said such moves will also encourage other female sportspersons that their communities are there to support them even in their worst times.

She said, “I will forever be grateful for this honour, which is greater than any medal.”

Ms Phogat, who hails from Balali in Haryana, faced a heartbreaking situation after she was disqualified on the day of the final match of the 50kg category at the Paris Olympics.
