Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass brings the official Olympic flag to her city after receiving it during the closing ceremony In Paris The flag was officially lowered earlier this week at the closing of the Summer Olympics.
Although Los Angeles has hosted the Games before — the most recent event was in 1984 — concerns have been raised about whether the city would be ready for the influx of people.
The lack of public transportation is one of the biggest problems in Los Angeles, which Mejia pointed out in a previous Xpost. He said that in terms of transportation vehicles per million people, Los Angeles has only a quarter of the vehicles compared to Paris.
However, Mayor Bass has promised that this will be a “no-car Games,” meaning the city will expand its public transportation system. They are also encouraging businesses to allow employees to work from home during the Games.
“We’re already meeting with businesses, particularly small businesses, about procurement,” Bass said, via Fox 11. “And I would say this is something I admire the action that Paris is taking, making this commitment to give a percentage of trade to small businesses here. We’re already working to create jobs by expanding our public transportation system so that we have a no-car game. And that’s an accomplishment in Los Angeles, because we’ve always loved our cars, but we’re already working to make sure that we can build a greener Los Angeles.”
For now, most Olympic events will be accessible via Los Angeles public transportation. However, on-site parking is expected for events at larger venues, including SoFi Stadium.
