On Saturday evening, England will return to a football match for the first time since losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin in July.

England’s second successive defeat in a Euro final also marked the end of Gareth Southgate’s tenure in charge of the Three Lions after nearly eight years in the role during which he led his country to two Euro finals, a World Cup semi-final and a World Cup quarter-final.

The manager has been handed the interim job as Southgate’s successor while the FA looks to appoint a permanent replacement for Lee Carsley, who has been promoted from managing the U21 side, with whom he was crowned champions of Europe at the U21 Euros in 2023.

Carsley’s first match will be against the country he has represented 36 times, as the England squad travel to Dublin to take on Ireland in the opening match of the new Nations League campaign.

England suffered a surprise relegation in the previous edition of the Nations League, finishing bottom of a group containing Italy, Hungary and Germany, to now play in League B.

After playing in Dublin, England return to Wembley for their next match on Tuesday, where they host Finland.

Saturday evening will also mark the start of a new era for Ireland as Icelandic manager Heimir Hallgrimsson will take charge of the side for the first time, having been in charge of Jamaica for the past two seasons.

The 57-year-old will have fond memories of managing against England, as he was in charge of the Iceland side that knocked Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions out of Euro 2016 at the second round stage in Nice.

Hallgrimsson will take over a team previously managed by Stephen Kenny, who led the side for three-and-a-half years, failing to qualify for a major tournament, losing six of Ireland’s eight qualifiers for Euro 2024, and only managing to take a point against a Gibraltar side full of part-time players.

The 47-year-old coach will begin his tenure as manager with two consecutive home matches, firstly against England on Saturday, during which a hostile and noisy atmosphere is expected, followed by Greece’s visit to Dublin on Tuesday night.

Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between the two countries since a friendly at Wembley in November 2021, when goals from Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave Gareth Southgate’s side a 3-0 win behind closed doors.

Five of the last six matches between the two countries have ended in draws, including the most recent clash in Dublin in June 2015, while England’s victory at Wembley three years ago remains their only win over Ireland in six attempts, dating back to 1985, 39 years ago.
