GB swimmer Clegg wins second Paralympic gold

Stephen Clegg won his second gold medal of the 2024 Paralympics in a tightly contested men’s S12 100m butterfly final.

Clegg, the world record holder in the event, struggled to reach the line but managed to take first place in 57.49 seconds.

Neutral Paralympic athlete Dzmitry Salei of Belarus won the silver medal, while Raman Salei of Azerbaijan took the bronze.

It is Clegg’s second gold in Paris, having previously won the S12 100m backstroke at the Games – and the 18th gold of the GB swimming team’s impressive campaign.

The swimming team has won 32 medals at these Games, more than any other sport – fewer than the 47 medals they won at Rio 2016, but more golds than they did eight years ago.

And for Clegg, winning gold in the event in which he has held the world record since 2021 offers a chance at redemption after the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago, where he was beaten by the narrowest of margins in the final.
