F1 shelves rookie race for 2024

Formula 1 will not hold a sprint race for novice drivers in Abu Dhabi after the final grand prix of the season, the governing FIA said on Wednesday.

The concept has been discussed for some time but stakeholders decided not to proceed at a meeting of the Formula 1 Commission at the RB team’s factory in Faenza, Italy.

“Although the concept received widespread support, it was determined that the event would not take place in 2024 due to time and organizational constraints,” the FIA said in a statement.

“Discussions will continue to prepare a possible concept and plan for 2025.”

The last Grand Prix of the season is on 8 December at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi.

The sprint format, with qualifying and a 100km race on the same day, will potentially give up to 10 novice drivers the chance to compete against each other in their cars without the worry of damage to teams.
