Euro 2024: How can Scotland qualify from the group?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes, but probably not.

If Germany beats Switzerland and Scotland defeats Hungary, the Scots and the Swiss would each have four points.

We can forget about the first tiebreaker series because it only refers to the game between the two, which ended in a draw.

Then we look at the goal difference in all three group matches. Scotland would need a seven-goal difference to finish second. Unlikely, unless the Swiss suffer a heavy defeat against the hosts.

If – and this may be the biggest if of the century – Scotland and Switzerland are level on points, goal difference and goals scored, the one with the better disciplinary record will win.

And after that? We don’t want to go into that in more detail now…
