DiJonai Carrington criticizes WNBA for not broadcasting historic Suns-Sparks game on national TV
TD Garden – The Connecticut Sun and Los Angeles Sparks made history by becoming the first WNBA This is the greatest team to ever play in Boston. They played in front of a packed house at TD Garden, receiving great applause from the crowd.
But, unless you lived in LA or Boston, the only place you could watch the game was on WNBA League Pass or the league’s X livestream.
Sun guard DiJonai Carrington, who scored a game-high 19 points and scored a last-minute lead to help Connecticut hold on for a 69-61 win, doesn’t think that should be the case. Earlier in the day, she tweeted that she had to do her own promo for the game, which seemed to be a reference to the fact that the WNBA as a league hadn’t done much to promote the Sun-Sparks matchup and its historical significance.
Since we have to do our own promotion…
we are playing @TDGarden Tonight and 19k+ sold out. First W game here. Historic. Not on TV, but you can watch it here on Twitter. @WNBA— dιjonai carrιngton♛ (@DijonaiVictoria) August 20, 2024
After the win, Carrington was asked about her tweet.
“I always keep it real, and I think Connecticut has been historically disrespected as a franchise. So sometimes, if you want something, you have to go out there and do it yourself. So, that’s what I did for us. I think there could have been a lot more hype or promotion from the top level. You know, Connecticut announced we were playing this game almost a year ago.”
wnba released its broadcast schedule In April, the Fever had their largest national television presence to date. The league announced that 36 of the Indiana Fever’s 40 games would be broadcast on the WNBA’s national broadcasts and its streaming partners, while the Aces and Liberty received 8 nationally televised games each.
Sun’s early television programs Three games were shown on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN3, eight games on ION, two games on ABC, and one game on CBS.
“This game should have been shown on national television,” Carrington said. “In my opinion, you shouldn’t have to pay for any kind of subscription to see this historic game.”
Dijonai Carrington was asked about blaming the WNBA for not promoting the sport enough:
“This game should have been broadcast on national television. In my opinion, you shouldn’t have to pay for any kind of subscription to watch such a historic game.” https://t.co/iff6dMBKna pic.twitter.com/gA9A4zRTuI
