British number one Katie Boulter has reached the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open after a straight sets win over China’s Wang Ziyu.
The 28-year-old player, seeking her third title of the year, defeated Wang 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes.
Second seed Boulter needed a tie-break to win a tough first set before securing a more comfortable victory in the second set against the world No. 100.
After the win Bolter said, “That was quite a match. Wang is an incredible opponent and she never gives up. She’s very talented and all credit to her.”
“He made me work very hard today and he’s got a bright future ahead of him, that’s for sure.”
Boulter, ranked 29th in the world, won her first WTA 500 trophy in San Diego in March defending her title at the nottingham open In June.
She will face Varvara Gracheva or Anastasia Zakharova on Friday for a place in the semi-finals.
