Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz hit 17 aces for a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 three-set win over Marcos Giron in the opening round of the Japan Open in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Hurkacz, seeded second, won 82 percent of points on his first serve and converted three of his six break chances. The biggest chance came in the first game of the third set. Tied at one set apiece, Giron lost his serve and was never able to level the match, which took just over two hours.
Matteo Berrettini of Italy and Ugo Humbert of France also advanced on Wednesday. Berrettini defeated Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4, and Humbert beat wild-card entrant Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan 6-1, 6-2.
China Open
The only main draw match on the day’s schedule in Beijing was cancelled as Hungary’s Fabian Marozsán withdrew due to illness. He was scheduled to play China’s Zhou Yi. Yi will now face Russia’s Pavel Kotov in the first round.
