Why the Angels would cover the spread/win
Mike Trout is out for the seasonWhich seems to be a recurring theme for the Angels every year for the past few seasons. Things are not working out for them. Trout is unable to stay healthy, ruining his great career. The Halos have neither the talent nor the health. Morale is low. Plus, frustration seems to be running rampant in the clubhouse, especially after losing yet another series, this time two of three against the Atlanta Braves.
Jo Adell leads the team in home runs. But that’s not saying much, considering he only had 18 home runs on Sunday. Adell is also only hitting .202. That’s not a recipe for success. Jake Neto leads the Angels with 108 hits. But he’s only batting .263. When your top hitter is hitting .263, you have a major problem. And that’s been one of the key issues with the Halos all season. While they will have the occasional good game, most of the time the offense struggles to produce any runs or hits.
Fulmer hasn’t won a game yet. It doesn’t look like he’ll get a game here until he figures out all of his pitches. When Fulmer finishes this start, he’ll hand it over to a bullpen that ranks 19th in baseball in team ERA. Ben Joyce is the new closer and has blown both of his save opportunities since the Halos gave him the role.
The Angels will cover the spread if they can generate some hits and put up some early runs while keeping Lugo working. Then, they just have to avoid making mistakes against one of the best young hitters in baseball.
Why the Royals would cover the spread/win

The Royals enter this series tied with the Angels for last place in the American League wildcard race, 3 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox after their fourth consecutive win. Amazingly, they have found their rhythm this season and are on the verge of returning to the postseason for the first time in several years. But there is still work to be done. So, they need some of their best hitters.
Bobby Witt Jr. equals Lou Gehrig As the first player to have 40-plus hits in a month and bat .450. This accomplishment was extraordinary and put the Royals in the playoffs. But Witt has struggled against the Halos in his career. Unfortunately, he is batting just .200 with 11 hits, three home runs, 11 RBI and four runs scored in 13 games against the Angels. The Royals need the best from him in this game.
Salvador Perez has had a good season and hopes to continue his streak in baseball. Notably, he has also done well against the Angels, batting .306 with 64 hits, 10 home runs, 30 RBI and 27 runs batted in in 53 games against them. Vinny Pasquantino has also had a good season and will look to keep his momentum going against the Halos.
Lugo has been awesome this season. He has the right stuff and mechanics. When Lugo finishes, he’ll hand it over to a bullpen that ranks 25th in baseball in team ERA. James MacArthur has struggled in the closer’s role, going 4-5 with a 4.91 ERA and 18 saves in 24 opportunities. The Royals need better results.
The Royals will cover the spread if Witt can crush the baseball and Perez can drive it in. Then, they need Lugo to continue to hit in his spots and dominate the Angels.
Final Angels-Royals prediction and picks
The Angels came into Sunday 66-58 against the run line, while the Royals were 69-55. Also, the Angels are 32-25 against the run line on the road, while the Royals are 35-28 against the run line at home. But the Royals are just 13-12 against the run line during Lugo’s starts. Most of those have come against good teams, and Lugo has led the Angels to a 4-2 start this season. Expect history to repeat itself.
