Ange Postecoglou wants Tottenham to remove ‘Spursy’ tag after latest collapse

tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has challenged its players to embrace the ‘Spursy’ tag and prove it wrong.

Spurs Lost 2-0 lead to taste defeat At Brighton before the international break – the 10th time the club had taken a lead of two goals or more Premier League And later lost.

London rivals West Ham visit on Saturday – a fixture which sparked ‘Spursy’ talk after Tottenham squandered a three-goal lead during Jose Mourinho’s tenure in 2020 to draw 3-3.

But while Postecoglou dismissed the criticism as “irrelevant”, he acknowledged that the only way to change this is through success.

“You say it has happened 10 times, but it has not happened to me even 10 times, so give me a break. Let me get to 10 and then start tagging, but you have to accept it, right?” Postecoglou said.

“People will always find the easy way out, if you’ve got a wound, stick your finger in that wound and if you’re not willing to admit when things haven’t gone well, then make sure things are good. Things are going well!

“There is a way to change this. If we want to change the perception of us, it won’t come because of ‘please don’t call us those names’, it will come because we are proving that we are a team that can be consistent in our vision . Success.”

During an interview with Optus Sport this week, Postecoglou jokingly said he was ready to “explode” when the Spurs international returns and could give details about Brighton.

He added: “The second half was pretty much all about us, we didn’t look like ourselves at all. We were really inactive with and without the ball. What we did lacked real conviction and courage.

“It was almost like we felt like we had done enough. “I haven’t seen that from us before and it’s a good lesson for the whole group that you’ve got to make sure no matter how the game is going, you stick to the fundamentals of your football.”

“I have always worked on the basis that my role also includes developing coaches and that is something I am very proud of,” Postecoglou said.

“Ryan is clearly someone who sees himself taking advantage of that opportunity one day. This is a really important decision for people. It’s not that we want him to leave and certainly with Ryan, he’s doing a great job for us here.

“To be fair to Ryan, he was very straightforward about it. I told him I didn’t want it to take any time, and he didn’t. “He’s really happy where he is now and committed to us.”
