Alvarez: I left City in search of a new challenge

Julian Alvarez said he went away Manchester City to join after only two seasons Atletico Madrid because he needed “a new challenge”.

Argentina International players who had contracts with City until June 2028, completed his move to Atlético was bought earlier this week for £82 million ($104m).

“I felt I needed a change in my career,” Alvarez said during his unveiling Friday.

“I was looking for a new challenge and I believe this club provides me with the means to give my best.”

Alvarez scored 19 goals in 54 games for City last season but failed to beat any team. Erling Haaland as the first choice striker in the team.

“I’m here to help the team and fight for every title,” Alvarez said. “I’m very happy and motivated.

“I spoke to (Diego) Simeone and he said he wanted me to come here. He said I was going to help the team and they would build on my strengths and help me improve my weaknesses. My goal is to do my best, help the team win and take Atletico to the highest level.”

The 24-year-old won six trophies at City, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League. During his stint at the club, he played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 2022 and won the title as well. America’s Cup earlier this summer.

“I learned a lot there (at City). I’m grateful for the two years I spent there,” Alvarez said.

After spending two seasons with Pep Guardiola, the forward has expressed his desire to work under Simeone.

“They (Guardiola and Simeone) are among the best coaches in the world,” he said.

“I don’t feel like a superhero after winning the World Cup. I still have a lot to learn and improve.”

“I am very happy to be working with Simone, recognising his importance to this club and to world football.”

Atletico will begin their La Liga campaign on August 19 Villarreal,
