AFL Finals Week 1 team: Cats make big decision on youngster, Port locks Butters in for qualifying final

Geelong has decided not to recall swingman Sam de Koning for Thursday night’s qualifying final clash against Port Adelaide.

The 2022 premiership defender, who has been used regularly in the ruck this season, was declared fit to play earlier in the week after missing the final round of the home-and-away season with a knee injury.

De Koning played in the Cats’ VFL team last week in a loss to Werribee to prove his fitness.

But the Cats have opted to take an unchanged line-up to Adelaide Oval, with de Koning and veteran forward Gary Rohan both named as emergencies.

Another experienced pairing of Tom Hawkins and Cameron Guthrie will return from injury in the Cats’ VFL semi-final against Southport at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday afternoon, looking to try their hand for semi-final or preliminary final selection in the senior team, depending on whether they can win on Thursday night.

The Power have included star midfielder Jack Butters in the squad despite suffering an eye injury in midweek, while veteran Charlie Dixon is preferred to Todd Marshall in attack.

Dixon replaces the dropped Dante Vicentini, while Quinton Narkel, a former Cats player, replaces the injured Kane Farrell.

The Power decided not to replace Farrell in defence, and included young paceman Josh Sinn in the emergency role alongside Visentini and Marshall.
