Manchester United confirmed the capture of Ruben Amorim as Eric ten Hag’s successor at the end of the working week and, while he is still a week or two away from officially joining the club, we asked our panel of experts Has asked whether the rising star of management is the right man for the job.
Alex Wrigley
Amorim’s credentials cannot be denied after ending Porto/Benfica’s 19-year stranglehold on the Portuguese top flight at just 36 before adding another player to their trophy cabinet last season. However, there have been many ‘right people for the job’ over the last decade, and their continued failure confirms that the issues are systemic. The upside is that the involvement of INEOS and a new, talented young coach could prove to be a turning point for a club in turmoil.

By all accounts he has a touch of class but may need a touch of magic to sort out this United side but if given the time and budget he could be the right man to take the team forward . The next few weeks will be important and any business done in January will need to be headed in the right direction.

Amorim’s managerial record at Sporting cannot be denied, he has won two Primeira Liga titles among his five trophies, but can he handle the increased scrutiny and pressure of being United boss? The 39-year-old will have a huge hunger and desire to succeed and I think it’s right that the club are not adopting a stop-gap, as that would simply be the end of the road. It will take a positive start to keep the fans on their side, but there is a lot to like in Amorim’s selection.
Ian Wilkerson
Didn’t we come here first? Another major continental coach is being punished out the Old Trafford door like a pig in the abattoir. There are too many managers at United to suggest the issues are anything but cultural. Unless he simultaneously criticizes some people and tells the Teflon players some home truths, I think this will be a big blemish on his CV and we’ll be back here in a few seasons.
Warren Ashurst
He may prove to be a good appointment in the future, but I felt they would have been better off bringing in someone with Premier League experience. Thomas Frank would have been a possibility or even got Thomas Tuchel signed up before the England call up. It seems Amorim will be a popular choice among United fans, meaning there will be a positive atmosphere at Old Trafford from the start.
