Ruud van Nistelrooy held his first news conference on Thursday after being appointed as United’s interim manager.
The former Manchester United striker said he was told he would have to take up the role for a “short” period and added that he was “anticipating” he would take charge of Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea.
Van Nistelrooy said, “I felt I was called to help move the club forward in this situation and obviously it was difficult that Eric (ten Hag) had to leave.”
“It was very disappointing, obviously with mixed emotions, but after that you have to change the mentality to win because at the end there are 75,000 people waiting and celebrating, and millions of people watching at home.
“I think that’s what we’re trying to do and at least for Sunday, then we’ll see.”
Van Nistelrooy also discussed conversations he had with Ten Hag and former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson following his dismissal this week, having watched Wednesday’s win at Old Trafford.
Of Ten Hag, who he spoke to before Wednesday’s win over Leicester, he said: “Obviously (he’s) very disappointed because he really cares about the club.
“From the first conversation we had with him about coming back to the club, I really felt that he cares and loves the club and wants to take this club forward.
“That’s where we connected and that’s why he’s also hurt that he had to leave, but (he’s) proud of his accomplishments here with the two Cups and obviously the history that he’s leaving with it.” Is.”
Of United great Ferguson, Van Nistelrooy said: “We talked a little bit about my situation, a little bit about the team and above all he wished me good luck for the game. It’s always great to talk to him.” Is.”
