Jamie Benn’s ‘disappointing’ statement after Stars’ crushing defeat at the hands of Sabers

“It’s disappointing,” Benn said, via NHL.com. “It seems like this year we haven’t really gotten it yet. I think maybe tonight was just a reflection of our 5-on-5 game. Just not working hard enough, not working hard enough away from the puck, not supporting the puck, not winning any battles, and not making any face-offs.”

Jamie Benn, Stars have struggled in one key area

Jamie Benn and the Stars have found success over the years thanks to their defensive ability. So far, Dallas has adopted a tough style of defense that has helped them win five of their first seven games. However, there is one area in which the team has struggled: the power play.

Dallas had three power play opportunities Tuesday, two of which came in the first period. They failed to capitalize on any of these opportunities. Overall, the Stars are 2-for-21 this season with the man advantage. According to ESPN, this is good for the fourth-worst power play percentage in the entire NHL.

Overall, however, the Stars could not keep up with the Sabers in any aspect of the game on Tuesday. Head coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged power play issues after the game. But the reasons for the loss in this game go deeper than one area.

“I thought the story of the game was that their execution was better than ours,” DeBoer said, via NHL.com. “Including the power play, but also 5-on-5. And I thought they were hungrier than us. He blocked more shots, he won more battles, won more one-on-one battles. “It’s hard to go on the road and win if you’re not as desperate as the other team.”

The Stars certainly have the talent to change things on the power play. It’s just a matter of putting things together and finding some stability. The Stars will take the ice again in Dallas on Thursday when they travel to take on the Boston Bruins.
