Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox explained Friday why he’s taking it slow when it comes to signing a contract extension.
according to Sam Amick and Anthony Slater Of The Athletic, Fox suggested he wanted to make sure the Kings were ready to win going forward before making a commitment:
“For one, I’m not in a rush. For two, I just want to make sure we know where we are, because people have watched the league – like, a team’s turnover can happen in a month or two or six months. I mean, if we were competing for a championship, (it could be different), like, (Boston Celtics) Jayson just won the championship or (Miami Heat) Bam. (Adebayo), who’s been to the Finals twice. I’m just using the guys that are in my class (who signed the extension) for me. Obviously, we’re continuing to build.”
Fox further explained that his ideal scenario is to remain with the Kings throughout his career and remain a perennial contender, but he doesn’t want to rush too much:
“I would love to stay here my entire career, stay on one team, stay in one city, for my entire career. It’s not unheard of, but it doesn’t happen a lot, so it would be nice to be in that category for sure.” It’s amazing to be able to build your life, your family, your entire career in one place.
“But I want to make sure that we’re in a position to come in and compete at a high level for a long time, not just fighting for a playoff spot. Obviously, with the way the West is going, we’ve got to Gotta continue to get better as a player and as a team, as an organization, and, I mean, I’m not saying I’m not staying or I’m staying here, But I’d love to be here, and I want to make sure we’re competing at a high level.”
According to ESPN, Fox is currently eligible for a three-year, $165 million max extension, but his agent, Rich Paul, is trying to get him an even bigger contract during the 2025 offseason. Shams Charania,
The one-time All-Star could become a free agent in 2026, and according to Amick and Slater, testing free agency is “in play” for Fox, especially if he doesn’t earn an All-NBA selection, which would be required. For him to receive a five-year, $345 million supermax deal.
