Portugal are one of only three teams in League A of the 2024/25 Nations League with the maximum points so far (Italy and Denmark are the other two). Yet, despite their 100 percent record, Roberto Martínez’s men have not had everything their way so far.
Portugal beat Croatia 2–1 on the first day of matches, before the same scoreline put them ahead of Scotland a few days later. In that second game, they needed Cristiano Ronaldo’s late winner to save the day.
Ronaldo did not start in the XI for that match. It seemed like a long-awaited move, even if it was only temporary.
Ronaldo appears to be holding Portugal back at Euro 2024. Because of his personality and track record, his teammates tried to thwart every attack that came through him.
But while no one can debate what the 39-year-old has achieved in the game – there is no doubt he is one of the greatest players of all time – Ronaldo is well past his best these days.
However, if anyone was hoping that Ronaldo’s departure would instantly make Portugal an independent team, they were disappointed by that wobbly performance against Scotland. In fact, the same old problems were plaguing Martínez’s team in that match until Ronaldo made a dramatic intervention.
Portugal were excellent in Euro 2024 qualifying, when their individual quality allowed them to easily overcome most of their opponents. But when they face a top team or even a member of Europe’s second tier, Portugal are not as impressive.
It will be interesting to see how they perform against Poland, who can be a strange opponent when they are on the field. Michael Probierz’s men had a 3-2 win over Scotland on the opening day of the match, before losing 1-0 to Croatia last time out.
A win for Portugal would put them in a very good position indeed as they aim for a top two finish and a place in the quarter-finals.
