Man City surprises Barcelona in Women’s Champions League with Bunny Shaw’s goal

20-year-old defender Naomi Layzell, who signed from Bristol City in the summer, put the hosts ahead with a goal in the 36th minute, the first goal of her career so far. Layzell then added an assist to her memorable evening and set up Khadijah Shaw to score the second with 13 minutes of normal time remaining.

It was City’s first game in the competition since 2020–21, when they beat Barcelona 2–1 in the quarter-final second leg at the same venue, but lost 4–2 on aggregate.

Barça won the trophy for the first time that season and have since appeared in each of the three finals, winning the last two.

Taylor had said before the meeting that she was excited to see her team test themselves against a team she has no doubt is the best in the women’s game – and that she would be delighted with their subsequent performance.

90+6′ – Man City 2-0 Barcelona

Almost there now. The truth is that Barcelona didn’t even come close to getting themselves back into this match – lots of possession and pressing but very little in terms of goalscoring opportunities.

Lyon shoots from about 30 yards, which travels about the same distance. This is a huge victory for the city.

Layzel needs to be helped off the pitch as she goes down with no strain – possibly a twist or cramp, hopefully nothing more catastrophic.

Alexandri collapses in a heap and looks to be in considerable discomfort, so it’s a bit of a treat for the City defender.

A great performer tonight, the Spaniard.

Changes are coming at Barcelona: Putellas, Bonamati and Walsh out; Paredes, Vicky Lopez and Nazareth on.

Target 76′ – Man City 2-0 Barcelona

Where did he come from!! City were barely in Barcelona’s half after the break but Shaw made another run in behind and a pass from deep found him running past Lyon, he rounded Cole and curled a shot wide – But this means that it went under the keeper and behind the attacking defender who tries to make a block!

It went over the line and City won their second of the night 2-0!

Rolfo is out, Bruges in for Barcelona. Graham Hansen again causes problems with the run back, this eventually finds Bonamati and his deflected effort goes over the bar. Corner for the Catalans, but City clear once again.

A little over 15 minutes left and there is now a lot of one-way traffic. There is a minor clash in the box between Greenwood and Putellas with the latter taking a slight tumble
