Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated sixth seed American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the US Open women’s final on Saturday (September 7, 2024).
Sabalenka broke Pegula’s serve in the final game, braving the wild home ovations at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and won her first title at Flushing Meadows.
A year after falling behind in the final, the second seed came back from a break down in both sets to win, collapsing to the court in her moment of triumph.
Pegula, 30, had to wait a long time to reach her first major final but could not match the strength of her opponent despite the loud support of the New York crowd.
Sabalenka won her third Grand Slam title, winning the Australian Open twice.
