Rugby sevens: British men’s team ready for final qualifying tournament for Paris 2024

GB head coach Tony Roques has named a 12-player squad for the repechage tournament, with both Tom Emery and Alex Davis returning.

Roques took over as coach of the British men’s sevens team at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where his team lost to Argentina in the bronze medal match.

Since Tokyo, GB have lost experienced captain Tom Mitchell and all-time World Series try scorer Dan Norton, both of whom retired from sevens playing in 2022.

Scotland’s Robbie Fergusson will captain the British national team, which has struggled in the last two seasons after losing its experienced Olympians, finishing ninth and eighth at the World Series.

However, in March, GB reached the final of the tournament in Los Angeles, where they were defeated 21-0 for a French team inspired by Antoine Dupont.

On the way to the final there were victories against the hopefuls Canada as well as Australia and Spain.

This month, World Series winners France also needed extra time to defeat Great Britain in the Grand Final in Madrid.

The men’s sevens tournament at the Olympic Games in Paris begins on July 24, the women’s competition starts on July 28.

Great Britain hopeful Squad: Kaleem Barreto, Ross McCann, Harry Glover, Morgan Williams, Robbie Fergusson (captain), Ethan Waddleton, Will Homer, Max McFarland, Jamie Barden, Charlton Kerr, Tom Emery, Alex Davis.
